Not only is it HOT to make out in the galleries, surrounded by contemporary art, it's free! That pretty much makes it the perfect date night.

5pm to 9pm
Free Thursdays
at Institute of Contemporary Art, 100 Northern Ave, Boston (South Boston/Waterfront)
FREE

There were those who sat through the dreaded purgatory tent of 'free opening day', but let's forgive & forget because now we can amble in any Thurdsday night. It’s technically called ‘Target Free Thursday Nights’, because Thursday evenings are free as long as Target will sponsor it. I say, "Who cares? You see the same darn thing!"

The cool thing is that they actually do special events on many Thursday nights.  Below are the original posted events.  I'lll try to keep up, but there's a good chance to see something extra if you go on Free Thursdays. At the very least, take a walk around the galleries and enjoy the fantastic view of the harbor.

The ICA offers six docent-led tours free with museum admission. Tours leave from the lobby.

• Target Free Thursday Night
6 & 7 pm         Introduction to the ICA

• Saturday  & Sunday
1 &  2:30 pm    Introduction to the ICA

The Introduction to the ICA tour focuses on the museum as a whole, showing architectural highlights and discussing the concepts behind architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s design of the new ICA.

Sounds like I have to hit the ICA more frequently. I've only been once so far but now that the weather is warming up... Not a bad destination for a motorcyclist. Gotta do it.

A couple upcoming additions to "Free Thursday Night" -- I didn't do much research into these, but you can give it a look:

    3/20

    6:30pm
    Ranjani Shettar and William Cordova

Momentum 10 artist Ranjani Shettar from India and “Street Level†artist William Cordova of Lima, Peru, discuss their work and today’s global environment for creating art.

Free tickets available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the admissions desk one hour before the start of the program (seating limited).

    3/27

    6:30pm-8:30pm
    The Working is the Work

A gallery performance by The Institute for Infinitely Small Things in association with the exhibition "The World as a Stage." Using performance and conversation, the Institute conducts creative, participatory research that aims to temporarily transform public spaces while investigating social and political “tiny things.†For this performance, Institute members will assume the role of ICA laborers in various ways.

    Hey, U.

I got an email from ICA. Do you have any more info to share on this?

"Come for the opening night of The World as a Stage on February 1, and visit the Water Café by Wolfgang Puck, presenting a special menu on Thursday and Friday nights. Sample Mediterranean antipasto, a cheese plate, mini crab cakes, or sweet chili-glazed chicken wings, plus a selection of beer and wine."

LOL....sounds like you need a few drinks too!

I joined as a member last year, but have yet to get back to the museum. Since I never go, I question whether to renew. Now that I know they have alcohol, maybe I should reconsider?! LOL

    Yep! After 5pm...

FYI, the MFA is also free after 4pm on Wednesdays. I think there WAS a posting for that at some point. Not sure if there still is.

I think the summer is better b/c one can sit on the outside stage like stair case they have and look over both the H2O and the live band playing. I jumped in a tour group once and it was nice but I don't think I know enough about art to fully appreciate their collection.
