PETA Did It! Nike Drops Vick

Nike announced on Friday, July 29, 2007 that it has suspended Michael Vick's contract without pay and will stop selling all Vick-related products at its stores. <!-- D(["mb","</font\></p\></font\></p\>
<p\><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2"\><strong\>This is
a big victory, one that simply would not have happened
without your action and those of more than 165,000
others.</strong\></font\></p\>
<p\><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2"\>As you know, the
allegations against Michael Vick are so serious and disturbing
that The Humane Society of the United called on his corporate
backers to end their commercial relationships with the star
player. This is a big victory, one that simply would not have happened without your action and those of more than 165,000 others.

As you know, the allegations against Michael Vick are so serious and disturbing that The Humane Society of the United called on his corporate backers to end their commercial relationships with the star player. I’m so pleased that Nike has signaled it has a zero tolerance policy for athletes who may be involved with staged animal fights and other forms of malicious animal cruelty.

Nike's statement reads as follows:

“Nike has suspended Michael Vick’s contract without pay, and will not sell any more Michael Vick product at Nike owned retail at this time. As we’ve said before, Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent. However, we do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen in the United States, therefore, we have not terminated our relationship.”

Also today, Reebok agreed to stop selling Michael Vick-branded products. The company does not have a contract with Vick but has an official relationship with the NFL to sell its merchandise.

Thank you again for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle

PREVIOUS POST (Prior to Nike's Sacking of VICK!!!):

NFL quarterback Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons was recently indicted on charges of sponsoring a large dogfighting operation. The indictment alleges that dogs were housed, trained, and fought at a property owned by Vick and that dogs who did not perform well were executed by hanging, drowning, and, in at least one case, slamming their bodies to the ground. PETA will be at Niketown in Boston on Monday, July 30, to demand that the company immediately break all ties with Michael Vick.

Please join PETA for a demonstration outside Niketown in Boston. All materials will be provided, and we need activists to hold posters. Please contact Kate at KateW@peta.org if you can help or if you have any questions.

What: "Nike: Sack Vick" dogfighting protest
When: Monday, July 30, 12:00 noon to 1:00pm
Where: Niketown, at the corner of Newbury St. and Exeter St. in Boston.

The professional sports world is plagued with players who have been accused, charged, or convicted of cruelty to animals, abusing pit bulls, and dogfighting. We need to send a clear message to players and Nike that being a celebrity is not a sufficient excuse for breaking the law and that animal abuse should never be tolerated under any circumstances. Please forward this e-mail to everyone you know! <!-- D(["mb","</p\>
<p\>Be sure to tell people to visit <a href="http://getactive.peta.org/ct/vpxjQ1d1..." target="_blank" onclick="return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)"\><font color="orangered"\>PETA.org</font\></a\> to learn more about the
cruelty of dogfighting and to <a href="http://getactive.peta.org/ct/v7xjQ1d1..." target="_blank" onclick="return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)"\><font color="orangered"\>tell Nike to drop Vick now</font\></a\>!</p\>
<p\>Thank you for everything you do for animals!</p\>
<p\>Sincerely,</p\>
<p\>Lindsey Twombly, Outreach Programs Supervisor<br\>People for
the Ethical Treatment of Animals<br\>757-213-8746<br\><a href="mailto:LindseyT@peta.org" target="_blank" onclick="return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)"\><font color="orangered"\>LindseyT@peta.org</font\></a\><br\></p\>
<p\></p\>

</td\>
</tr\>
</table\>
<p\>
<table border="0" width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="center" bgcolor="#ffffff"\>
<tr\>
<td\><hr noshade size="1" color="aaaaaa"\>
</td\>
</tr\>
</table\>

<table border="0" width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="center" bgcolor="#ffffff"\>
<tr\>
<td\>
Visit the web address below to tell your friends about this.
<br\>
<a href="http://getactive.peta.org/join-forwar...=PETA&r=fpxjQ1d1qONX" target="_blank" onclick="return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)"\><img src="http://img.getactivehub.com/images/te..." border="0" valign="middle"\> Tell-a-friend!</a\><br\>
</td\>
</tr\>
</table\>

<p\>
<table border="0" width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="center" valign="top" bgcolor="#ffffff"\>
<tr\>
<td\>

If you received this message from a friend, you can
<a href="http://getactive.peta.org/PETA/join.h...=fpxjQ1d1qONXE" target="_blank" onclick="return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)"\>sign up for PETA's Online Community</a\>.
</td\>
</tr\>
</table\>
</p\>

<p\>
<table border="0" width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="center" valign="top" bgcolor="#ffffff"\>
<tr\>
<td\>

This message was sent to ",1] ); //-->

    After pressure put on by PETA at the NFL headquarters last week, the NFL decided to not have Vick show up for training camp. Did the NFL listen to PETA's message? We'll never know, but NOW PETA is turning its attention to Nike!! Nike has given Michael Vick millions of $$$ to endorse its products. A Michael Vick shoe has been a great moneymaker for Nike. Nike was set to release a new Vick shoe but has "postponed" that shoe introduction. They are probably waiting for the "hoopla" to die down.

    SHow Nike that the hoopla will not die down! SHow Nike that dogfighting is a serious issue and that Vick needs to be cut from his contract for "conduct unbecoming," that is, unsavory conduct which places Nike in a bad light. Nike WILL listen but only when Nike thinks that it may lose $$$ because of Vick.

    Boycott all Nike products until Nike does the right thing!!
