A turntablist spends hours tending insatiable machines, feeding countless discs covered in vinyl scars into the embrace of those graceful, delicate arms. They search for a hidden muse among racks of commercially manufactured lies, and weave chords of truth into stories. They create an opportunity for the audience to escape from the shackles of reality for a few brief moments, create a daydream of a better future.
For some, a daydream isn’t enough - they are driven to make that better future a reality. These extraordinary DJs harness the truth and beauty of shared musical experience, and using it as a tool they annihilate the distinction between art and activism.
Shelter is pleased to welcome one of those very rare people, Darryl Hell, as a special guest DJ on Saturday, May 3rd,
A true renaissance man, Darryl Hell is more than just an incredibly skilled industrial / experimental turntablist. (check out the video of his live remix of Consolidated’s ‘Tool and Die’ at www.s6k.com/toolanddie). He is also an artist (HellLabs 1-5), musician (Abstinence, Operation:Mindwipe), technical director (chashama Arts, NYC), arts educator (Urban Assembly School of Music and Art), video innovator (EBN) and civic activist (Real University), as well as a journalist and keen observer of human behavior (sektor 6 kommunikations). I can’t do justice to his years of work in this short format, please go to his site http://www.s6k.com for more details.
In his stomping grounds of NYC, Darryl manages to not only push the boundaries of electronic music as a creator and manipulator of his own experimental/industrial sound, but also to make changes for the betterment of the community. He works tirelessly to empower people, to raise their awareness of how decisions made by elected officials directly affect them, to expose hypocrisy wherever it is. He speaks out against brutality and injustice, and raises a loud, strong, clear voice denouncing those who threaten to take away our rights to think, to believe and to express ourselves freely.
Shelter invites you to attend as we welcome Hell to Boston and celebrate the life of the beat with other open-minded, independent parties - people we can believe in and be alive with. We’re not concerned with your job, your credit score, your plans, your scene, your politics, your sexuality, your fertility, your church, or your clothes. Shelter is about electronic music bringing great people together toward a shared, better future. We embrace freedom.
