Can you spare a book or two? (Event Over)

Event Over

I'm planning on sending out a package on Saturday 10/25 (or so). Just thought I'd give everyone another chance... * * * * * * On the good advice of my friend, Sooz, I'm posting this as an event (based on my Cheap Thrills group post). Read my (true) story, and see what you think: Hi, Someone I know is teaching English in Marianna, Arkansas through a program called, ‘Teach For America’. I thought I’d post something to cast a wider net to see how many books I could round up for her class. I did a little reading on Marianna, AR. The population is a little over 5,000 and the median income for a household is less than $18,000. About 37% of the population live below the poverty line. Sure, the cost of living is lower, but still... The school doesn’t provide much in the form of class materials. She’s spent about $500 of her own money on books. (Btw, the nearest bookstore is about 60 miles away.) The kids are reading the books -- sometimes during her class, but at least they’re reading them. These are books the students have expressed interest in reading: In Cold Blood -- Truman Capote (the most requested) The Perks of Being a Wallflower -- Stephen Chbosky Speak -- Laurie Halse Anderson The Bluest Eye -- Toni Morrison Catcher in the Rye – JD Salinger Midsummer Night's Dream -- Shakespeare If you have any of these titles laying around or see them at a used book store or whatever, there are young people that would really appreciate your generosity. I know it’s getting to be that time when every organization is hitting you up for something, but it doesn’t hurt to ask... Right? As I originally wrote, I’d be willing to pick up books in the Boston area. If you’d like to send some on your own, send me a private message and I’ll give you the info. Thanks for your time. ~r http://www.mariannaarkansas.org/ http://www.teachforamerica.org/

Robert, I would be happy to get supplies and fill a box for her. If you would like me to ship it directly to her, please send me her address. Or if you prefer to send it yourself, we can coordinate.
    Thanks,
    Ana

    Hi, Ana.

I emailed my friend, and she'd said she would appreciate any basic school supplies (including post-its).

As far as other books she said, "Honestly, any book that the students can become invested in would be wonderful. The most important thing is that they read."

    Hi, Ana.

Those are the ones I'm looking for.

I get the feeling these are books on her 'reading list' that the kids want to read -- and it's a great feat for these high-schoolers to read anything...

She didn't mention other school supplies, but I can inquire!

    Robert,

Would your friend the teacher, accept other books as well? My family has tons of books -many classics - some older than others, but in good condition. Also, what type of other school materials do they need? Pencils, pens, etc. Let me know, perhaps I can help.
