If you're not doing it already, resolve ... to get out and hear live local music. As Jonathan Perry said in The Boston Globe, you owe it to yourself to investigate why the Boston area's "musical landscape" is "so consistently exciting, surprising and gratifying."

- Dennis Brennan

Everything folk: roots, Americana, blues, bluegrass, newgrass, traditional, folk rock, blues, R&B and Celtic music and allied forms of dance happening from the greater Boston / Cambridge / Somerville area out to New England and into New York and eastern Canada.

Postings of general interest are welcome, but please limit discussion and events to folk and roots music in the Northeast.  Take discussion of pop and other forms of music to other Going groups.

An artist friend just told me of a potential sticking point, selling merchandise at an upcoming concert. In his contract there is no provision for selling merchandise; he was planning to have a friend sell it for him, and presumed, since there was no prior agreement, he would
    keep all proceeds.

The venue operator is now insisting on taking 15% of the sales.

My experience is to avoid this problem by agreeing how merchandise is to be sold and any sales split into the contract.

    1. If the house sells merchandise, it is customary it keep up to 15%.
    2. If the artist provides a person to sell merch, the artist keeps 100%.
    3. Some venues provide a volunteer and give the artist 100% of the sales.

Back to my friend's situation. Even though there is nothing in the contract, is it right for the venue to insist on taking 15%? Should he cave to the venue and give 15%, or stand his ground and tell the venue
    "no way"?

I'd be interested in hearing from artists and venue operators their thoughts about contracts and merchandise sales.

The Boston Globe has published a very nice piece by Jonathan Perry about the “Winter Warmer†benefit for Massachusetts families in need.

    http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2...

"Woody really spoke to me as a kid," Moock, 35, recalls. "My dad took me to see Pete Seeger and [Woody's son, musician] Arlo Guthrie, and Pete really moved me, too. I guess the music I've always been moved by is music that connects me to progressive issues and social involvement. It's always been a big part of what I've wanted to do as a musician."
