If you're not doing it already, resolve ... to get out and hear live local music. As Jonathan Perry said in The Boston Globe, you owe it to yourself to investigate why the Boston area's "musical landscape" is "so consistently exciting, surprising and gratifying."

- Dennis Brennan

Everything folk: roots, Americana, blues, bluegrass, newgrass, traditional, folk rock, blues, R&B and Celtic music and allied forms of dance happening from the greater Boston / Cambridge / Somerville area out to New England and into New York and eastern Canada.

Postings of general interest are welcome, but please limit discussion and events to folk and roots music in the Northeast.  Take discussion of pop and other forms of music to other Going groups.

Geoff has given so much to the Cambridge-area folk and bluegrass scene, it's time to give back (besides, his new "Blackbirds" is wonderful and deserving).

Please share this link - http://notlobmusic.blogspot.com/2008/... - to my blog with friends and anyone you know who has attended or performed a Cantab Monday night folk open mic or Tuesday bluegrass jam.

Folk fans have two easy to access/use calendar resources.

YAHOO ~ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NorthEa... contains recurring events such as folk radio broadcasts/webcasts, open mics and sessions. To add a recurring listing or correct an error, send an email to NorthEastFolk-owner@yahoogroups.com

Between programs? Access the listing of worthy broadcast and internet stations in the group database ~ Broadcast & streaming folk/roots radio stations (and ones to avoid) ~
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NorthEa...

SISTER WEBSITE ~ Access via http://northeastfolk.org/folkforum, then click on “calendarâ€. This calendar is maintained directly by members. Venues, artists and fans can load concert information into the calendar interface and create a message they have control over to display on a child board of their choosing.

Remember to check with the artist/venue before heading out.

This Thursday, Dec. 4, BCMFest will present the second Celtic Music at Toad ("CM@Toad") Night.

Last month's premiere CM@Toad went so well we decided to give it another go. This time around, the line-up will be: tunes and songs with Ellery Klein & Liz Simmons; a blast of Cape Breton with Kimberley Fraser & Emerald Rae; and some mighty Irish music with Dan Gurney, Jimmy Noonan & Andy Collins.

The fun starts at 10 p.m., and it's all free. Toad is located at 1912 Mass. Ave. in Cambridge, right across from the Porter Square shopping center. Directions and other information are available from their Web site [toadcambridge.com]

A Boston Music Award perhaps? Ot two? Or three?

In years past I have been democratic in listing in NEFolknRoots - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NorthEa... - all nominees in the appropriate categories, but this year I am only going to post the best solicitations from the artists/bands who are my personal favorites.

Feel free to do so yourself.

    Just received from Billy Beard:

    Good Day

As I get older there are few things that I enjoy more than putting my feet up and enjoying a nice glass of an old single malt scotch while I stare admiringly at the many trophies in our gigantic trophy room here at our Somerville manse (right next to the indoor pool). Would you perhaps aid in my bemusement by voting in this year's Boston Music Awards?

    Simply go to this link.

    http://contest.flyfi.com/bostonmusica...

Open the page and scroll down on the "category" menu to these categories and vote for the name I've conveniently provided on the right.

Outstanding Live Act of the Year: Dennis Brennan Band
Male Vocalist of the Year (Local): Dennis Brennan
Outstanding Americana Act Of The Year: Session Americana

    My most humble thanks!

    Billy Beard

I second Billy's nominations and hoist a crystal glass of single malt to three of my perennial favorites DBB, Dennis and SA!

Oh heck, here are all my others (if no category is listed I have no preference or interest in the nominees - convince me otherwise):

Album of the year (local) - Beneath the Blue by Duke Levine
Best new act of the year - The Low Anthem (even if they did cancel their Notlob gig)
Female vocalist of the year (local) - Aoife O'Donovan (Crooked Still) (this was a tough one, but Aoife is a 3-time alumna (working on 4), always has a hug for me, and I'm easily bribed).
Outstanding blues act of the year - James Montgomery (primarily based on his outstanding November show with Jay Geills at the Bull Run).
Outstanding live act of the year - Dennis Brennan Band - They deserve this for nothing else than their Lizard residency, and for Dennis' long-time associations with Sally's and Atwood's.

Like all of these contests, the artist/band with the strongest street team will stuff the ballot box with votes, so it's more of a glamor contest than a talent recognition.

    Boston Music Awards Voting Policy

Voting is open to the online public from November 19 to December 5, 2008 at midnight. Winners are determined by a combination of votes from the Academy and the public, with the public accounting for 1/3 of the decision.

The custom online voting system was developed by Emergent Music LLC/FlyFi for the Boston Music Awards. The system was designed with the dual goals of providing a good user experience and limiting any potential abuse. FlyFi will be actively looking for 'gaming' and any abuse that could affect the outcome of voting, and will adjust the results accordingly.

A 'Vote' button is located near the name of each nominee. When a user first attempts to vote, he or she will see an industry-standard CAPTCHA challenge to ensure that the user is a human and not an automated system. The challenge consists of the presentation of an image of a distorted word that the user must type back. Upon successfully passing the challenge, users will be allowed to cast one vote for as many different artists as they wish. This CAPTCHA challenge eliminates voting by robots and other automated attempts to skew the vote. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha for more details. Users will be allowed to vote again for the same artist only after they pass another CAPTCHA challenge, with the corresponding delay and extra work required.

The intent of the system is to encourage fans to support their favorite artists, but not to vote excessively. Emergent Music reserves the right, under it's responsibilities to NEMO, as producer of the Boston Music Awards, to report any voting irregularities and adjust the results accordingly.

    Roots
    Ponk Media
    ESSENTIAL "Sweet Evelina"

Arkansas rockabilly giant Sleepy LaBeef has been barnstorming for six decades, including a show with Elvis Presley, but he takes a welcome side trip on this new disc. Rather than heat up the dance floor, he plays stripped-down, acoustic songs, evoking Rick Rubin's work with Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond. The results are dazzling and showcase his voice, which has widened in scope since he gave up a three-pack-a-day habit some years ago. LaBeef opens on a too-facile note with Leadbelly's "Cotton Fields," but hits his stride on obscure gems ranging from traditional tunes that he arranged (the lovely "Sweet Evelina" and "In the Pines," both featuring backup singer Katy Arnovick) to Fred Rose's lament, "Foggy River," and a couple of murder ballads topped by Jack Clement's "Miller's Cave." LaBeef is reflective throughout, scoring nobly with Woody Guthrie's "Philadelphia Lawyer" and a couple of gospel songs, including the hopeful "The Open Door" (penned by LaBeef's wife, Linda) and a classic closing of "Amazing Grace." This is a tasteful, change-of-pace LaBeef album for fans who thought they had heard everything from him. (Out now)

One of the country's finest singer/songwriters, pickers and storytellers returns to Newburyport for the first time in 2 decades at the very intimate 19th century landmark theatre.

After several years of inactivity on the touring front, David Bromberg is beginning to reappear on the live concert scene. Bromberg has reunited the "big band" several times over the last few years. David is also beginning to play more with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason in their show titled "An Evening of American Acoustic Music". This show creates an eclectic musical journey through several uniquely American music forms. The show features the early works of Stephen Foster, the Texas swing of Bob Wills, Cajun fiddle tunes, Delta and Chicago Blues, Bluegrass, Folk and much more.
