Everything folk: roots, Americana, blues, bluegrass, newgrass,
traditional, folk rock, blues, R&B and Celtic music and allied
forms of dance happening from the greater Boston / Cambridge /
Somerville area out to New England and into New York and eastern
Canada.
Postings of general interest are welcome, but please limit
discussion and events to folk and roots music in the
Northeast. Take discussion of other forms of music to other
Going groups.
If you're not doing it already, resolve in 2008 to get out and hear
live local music. As Jonathan Perry said in The Boston Globe 12/28,
you owe it to yourself to investigate why the Boston area's
"musical landscape" is "so consistently exciting, surprising and
gratifying."
- Dennis Brennan, 1/2/08.

March, 2008 ushered in the sixth year of war and occupation "without end" on Iraq. In an act of arrogance and impunity, Congress in a bipartisan vote approved another $162 billion in funding for the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. The stepping up of threats against Iran and the increased likelihood of a U.S. troop "surge" into Afghanistan point to an imperative for action and an independent voice from the peace and justice movement.
In light of these developments, grass roots forces from around the country gathered together at the end of June for the National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation in Cleveland, Ohio. At the conference an action plan for the months ahead was discussed and approved in a democratic vote. As part of this plan, over 95% voted in favor of supporting pre-election protests being organized in cities and localities around the country on October 11, 2008.
In Boston, the October 11 mobilizing committee has been formed to organize a mass
demonstration on Boston Common around the following demands/slogans:
• STAND UP FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
• STOP THE WARS AND OCCUPATIONS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN.
• BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW.
• MONEY FOR JOBS, EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE AND HOUSING …NOT FOR
WAR AND OCCUPATION.
• NO SANCTIONS OR ATTACK ON IRAN.
• STOP THE RACIST SCAPEGOATING OF ARABS AND MUSLIMS.
• STOP THE ASSAULT ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES.
It was on October 11, 2002 that Congress approved the "Iraq War Resolution" granting the Bush administration authorization to invade Iraq. The weeks ahead will continue to be filled with debate as the election campaigns gear up. Instead of being spectators who watch the media pundits put their spin on the political pronouncements of the candidates, we will be actively engaged in injecting our agenda, the antiwar agenda, into the intensifying debate.

Return of Scissormen + -
Your favorite guitar crazed cutting edge juke joint blues band Scissormen is
coming somewhere near you over the next few weeks. All tour dates are posted below this email. We're hitting the road behind our new album Luck in a Hurry, available at Amazon, iTunes and fine music stores across the US right now.
American roots music legend Jim Dickinson - producer of the Replacements' Let It Be, pianist for the Stones and Aretha - says this about Luck in a Hurry: Ever wonder what would have happened if Bukka White had discovered the Fuzz Tone? Or if Skip James had played piano with Antenna Jimmy and Drumbo from the Magic Band? Scissormen is acid blues for the 21st century.
We've also gotten great reviews from Cashbox, Blues Bytes, and the Chicago
Sun-Times. Copies of the CD along with a limited amount of Jinx Breakers
T-shirts and Scissormen jewelry will be available at the upcoming shows. And
request tunes from Luck in a Hurry at your favorite college, NPR, Public Broadcasting, or commercial specialty radio shows. More than 60 stations spinning already,

News from Geoff Bartley + -
A few seconds of my song A Letter from Prison (from my 1998 CD "One Kind Word") is in the movie "The Lucky Ones" starring Rachel MacAdams, Tim Robbins and Michael Pena released yesterday (Friday, September 26). It's an independent film from Lionsgate and will be shown only in some theatres.
The recording is by the progressive Nashville bluegrass band, The Infamous Stringdusters, who recorded a beautiful version of A Letter from Prison on their first Sugar Hill CD "Fork in the Road" released February 2007. Some members of the Stringdusters met at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and I often hired them to play at the Cantab in various line-ups under various names. The Stringdusters are currently touted in bluegrass publications as the best bluegrass band in the US, followed closely by The Del McCoury Band.
Anyway, Jean Schwartz (my representative) and I went to see the movie yesterday and liked it. It's a character study with an amorphous story line. The recording of A Letter from Prison plays in the background of an indoor scene where the three principals are looking at Hummers. The scene appears roughly half an hour into the movie and the song plays for maybe eight seconds.
As usual, the song credits are listed last in the credits at the end of the movie. Credits for A Letter from Prison appear on the left and everything is spelled right.
Woo-hoo!
Also, my new record is coming along and might be out by Thanksgiving. Mastering engineer Toby Mountain (Beach Boys, Boston, David Bowie, J. Geils, Arlo Guthrie, Bela Fleck, Bruce Cockburn, Alison Krause, Joan Jett, Nils Lofgren, Bob Marley, Morphine, NRBQ, Ringo Starr, Richard Thompson, Frank Zappa, and on and on) mastered it last week on Wednesday, September 17.
