Everything folk: roots, Americana, blues, bluegrass, newgrass, traditional, folk rock, blues, R&B and Celtic music and allied forms of dance happening from the greater Boston / Cambridge / Somerville area out to New England and into New York and eastern Canada.

Threads of general interest are welcome, but please limit discussion and events to folk and roots music in the Northeast.  Take discussion of other forms of music to other groups.

"If you're not doing it already, resolve in 2008 to get out and hear live local music. As Jonathan Perry said in The Boston Globe 12/28, you owe it to yourself to investigate why the Boston area's "musical landscape" is "so consistently exciting, surprising and gratifying."" - Dennis Brennan, 1/2/08.

Spider John Koerner on L&F today

Just received from Eli.

Hi folks, This didn't confirm until just this morning, hence the short notice. Folk/blues legend "Spider" John Koerner is scheduled to for a live half-hour on-air performance and interview on "Lost and Found" on WMBR today, beginning at approximately 12:45 PM! "Spider" John has been keeping the sounds of traditional and acoustic blues, folk/blues, and "old-timey" Americana alive for nearly 50 years, from the groundbreaking folk festivals of the early 1960s, to his current international touring schedule. Celebrating his 70th birthday later this week, "Spider" John is still going strong, and he will be performing tonight at Sally O'Brien's in Union Square, Somerville. I don't think they have a cover charge, so drop on by and hang out!

"Spider" John's website: http://www.mwt.net/~koerner

Sally O'Brien's pub: http://www.sallyobriensbar.com

We'll also have ticket giveaways today for lots of other great upcoming shows within the next couple of weeks, including Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks, Acoustic Hot Tuna, Levon Helm and more, so tune in for a somewhat "rootsy" edition of "Lost and Found" today.

As always, your requests and suggestions are welcome! Today 12 noon - 2 PM ET at WMBR 88.1 FM or http://www.wmbr.orghttp://lostwmbr.blogspot.com If you miss the show, archives are available for two weeks! Thanks for listening!

    Far out, man!

    Even if you cannot go, support the Arlo event (click "I like it"), that is unless you'd rather be with 35000 others singing "Sweet Caroline". Yikes, that's scary!

      Boardinghouse Park is a good outdoor place -- not too bug and well managed. If you drive into Lowell there are good parking garages - discounted parking - and then dinner options (if you don't picnic or buy on-site) are easy walks. I don't think coolers are allowed. They police the seating (blankets/low chairs only in front of the stage) and the seating is terraced so there are good sight lines.

    New Pete Seeger album set for Sept. 30 release

    Fishkill resident, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and folk singing legend Pete Seeger will release his first new album in five years Sept. 30.

    "Pete Seeger at 89" contains 32 songs, many of which have never been recorded, and will come out on Appleseed Records. This record was produced by Seeger and David Bernz, a Hudson Valley native who has worked often with Seeger, and is a member of Work o' the Weavers, a tribute band honoring the memory of Seeger's former ensemble.

    Joining Seeger on the CD are the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus, the After Hours Quartet, Hudson River Sloop Singers and violinist Sara Milonovich.

    Visit www.appleseedmusic.com and click on the links to the left to learn more about Pete; and to watch a video interview in which Seeger discusses the Clearwater organization. Seeger founded Clearwater, which is based in Poughkeepsie, to clean up the Hudson River. Visit www.clearwater.org for information.

      We got the fixins for your aural feast sans grease and messy sides. Pure 100% American finger-pickin good music in the most refined tavern in town. Dancing, too.

      Special ingredients this week:

      BILLY BEARD, soul stirrin, body waggin drums and vox;
      RUSSELL CHUDNOFSKY, aka The Savage Beast, guitars;
      KIMON KIRK, leaning to the left coast (catch him before he's gone), bass;
      DENNIS BRENNAN, maitre d'good time.

      World travellers Pippa and Clementine assure me that in Europe and Israel the bars don't get rocking before midnight, so get in here and do your American duty:
      SUPPORT LIVE, LOCAL MUSIC. You can even be home by midnight if you must.

      THIS IS OUR SECOND TO LAST SHOW AT ATWOOD'S SO WE'D LOVE TO MEET AND GREET YOU AND YOURS BEFORE MONTH'S END.

      The Cantab Lounge, Central Square, Cambridge, MA. Jake Armerding, Taylor Armerding, Zack Hickman and Mark Erelli. I always try to get the hellraisers for my Cantab gig, but this is ridiculous. This is an all-star game. You know Old Train hits the rafters, you know Erelli hits 'em too, but have you heard them hit together? But then there's Zachariah keeping us anchored to the beat, lest we get ahead of ourselves. Don't miss it. 10pm, $7 suggestion donation. Visit www.cantab-lounge.com.

      By the way, Signature has just announced that Mark's new CD, "Delivered", is available online, in stores 9/16. Details http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NorthEa...

    I did a quick little blurb on my blog, and I noticed it wasn't listed on Going. Figured someone around here might be interested... (trying to be helpful, Jeff...)

    9:30pm to Midnight
    Peter Mulvey
    at Atwoods Tavern, 877 Cambridge St, Cambridge (near Inman & Kendall Sq)
    $10

    WTF? There's almost never a cover at Atwoods! Well, Peter Mulvey is passing through town and he's worth it. Apparently this songwriter spent a couple years in Boston and often played in the T. (He recorded a whole CD of cover songs at the Davis Sq station in '01.) You might not have tipped him, so pay up for a night of songs from his rich rasp over sweet guitar work.

      Re "wtf", I had the same reaction. Read my post in the sister group.
