Especially the Maco shots. What lens do you use for those?
oh, I went to the pillow fight too, but the one in San Francisco!
It was fun, and scary at the same time. I was scared someone might
accidentally knock my camera out of my hands. haha.

You could try Bare Cove Park in Hingham. It's a former military
storage facility; there used to be several old abandoned artillery
storage buildings, some of which have been renovated or torn down,
but there may still be a few run down ones left.

i used a rebel xti, and was at my sisters graduation in BU and was
trying to take her photo with a zoom lens. Obviously flash is
useless because of the distance. I had my camera on
autofocus...everytime i took a picture of her it was blurry.
is there a technique that might help? or did i have to tripod and
take a picture when she wasn't moving?

something i do when shooting indoors or with a slower shutter speed
is press my elbows into my sides and take a deep breath just before
pressing the shutter and then hold that breath until the shutter
closes. it may not solve your problem entirely, but it eliminates a
lot of movement, which may help.

Hi Enrique,
You can use a faster lens (i.e f/1.8) or bump up the ISO. The rule
of thumb is that the slowest you can handhold a shot is a
reciprocal of the focal length. So if you are shooting at 50mm the
slowest shutter speed you can use is 1/50 seconds. Either using a
faster lens or a faster ISO will increase the shutter speed that
the camera sets.

I prefer to use natural light and the tips already given are good.
You can also try to trip the shutter between heart beats. Watch the
image jitter at each heart beat and push the shutter button slowly
with the intention of having it click just after one of these
jitters. If you can hold the camera that steady, you might find
that the background is sharp, but the person of interest has moved.
You could also buy a much brighter slave flash that triggers off of
your camera flash. Most digital cameras use a weak pre-flash to set
the exposure before the main flash. Make sure that you get a slave
that triggers off the second flash if your camera is like that.
I've bought a couple from
http://www.d-store.com/d-store/Digi-Slave... There are reviews of these and others at
http://www.steves-digicams.com/digi_acces... There are a couple of tricks that you can use with these. You can
use the slave to bounce flash off a ceiling or wall. I've taped a
piece of paper under the on-camera flash, bent to 45 degrees to
lessen the harsh direct flash while still illuminating the slave so
it triggers.
Another trick is to get more range by having a friend hold the
slave 10 or 20 feet closer to the subject.
If your camera doesn't allow setting the F stop, you may have to
play with the exposure settings on the slave.

Hi Michelle,
What do you own currently? Usually people tend to stick to the same
brand since they already own lenses. I shoot with a Nikon D200. I
still have my old film camera and the lenses and the D200 can take
the older lenses too (more on this later if you are interested in
Nikons).

Hi Sanjay,
I currently have a Canon (film) and I have been looking at the
Canons. I like the pictures I've taken with them and the feel of
the camera overall. I do like the Nikons as well, but you're right
about the lenses.

I just bought a used Canon 20d a week or so ago and I LOVE it. It
takes amazing photos, and is basically the same as the 30d, but
costs half as much. I paid about 700 including shipping. If you're
looking to buy used, I would recommend the buy & sell board at
fredmiranda.com
Oh, and goto a camera store and try them out! See which feels good
in your hands (I hated the rebel, liked the d40 but wanted the
autofocus it lacks, and decided to go with canon)

My advice?
Canon 5D
It's full-frame and I think is better than the more expensive ones
from Canon (the Mark series). You will not be disappointed with
this camera body. It's absolutely amazing. I love it.
As for lenses, the following are all great choices.
EF 14mm f/2.8L USM
or
EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
(although primes are sharper than zooms)
and either
EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
or
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
(depending on the speed you'd consider over zoom)
The ones with "L" after the F-stop are pro lenses (higher quality
all around). Do not get any of the EF-S lenses - they are cheap[ly
made]!
Shop around online and you'll find some great deals. Just be sure
you get one with an American warranty. Ask for it!

You guys are way more advanced than me. I've got the XT. I heard
the XTi is not much better for the price. Maybe after I sell some
photos to National Geographic, I'll upgrade to a more professional
one. Thanks for the info though, especially on the lenses!

most of them were with the standard 18-55mm lens. i do have a few taken with nikkor 55-200mm.
the pillow fight in nyc was great. i stood on a fence on the edge of it all. i would die if something happened to my camera.
