Looks like Downtown Lowell has undergone major change in the last
few years. (But I haven't really checked out many places...) Any
tips/pointers/no-nos for places to hang out?

Not too many places to avoid totally, that I can think of. The
downtown area, such as Market St. and Middle St. seem to be the
best. I would try to avoid walking into "The Acre", which is
roughly inside Dutton St., Fletcher St., Pawtucket St., and Father
Morissette Blvd.
You could also wander down to Boomer's off of the Pawtucket Blvd.,
if you're so inclined. It's on the Dracut side of the river, across
from the O'Rourke Bridge.
Also, you may want to try venturing into "The Acre" by just one
street, to The Olde Worthen. They seem to be doing an original
music thing there that I'm not sure is going to work out, but they
seem to be doing whatever it takes to get business in there.

You know I lived in Downtown Lowell for two years, (a year and a
half ago) and there are more CONDOS going in then places to hang
out.
Downtown didn’t really have much to offer for me since
I’m not into bars or club’s.
Downtown is all about ART
"The Brush Art Gallery” mixture of gallery and artist
studios/gift shops.
"The Revolving Museum" is a hit or miss on "quality" art work.
“Ayer Lofts” is a small lobby art gallery (
http://www.ayerlofts.com)
Lowell Camera Club has an exhibit at FirstMass Bank (formerly
Massbank) on Central ST. (
http://www.lowellcameraclub.com)
I avoid: (opinionated and depends on when you go and who cooks the
food)
Mexican: Mambo Grill… food was bland and not fully cooked.
Nice theme though. Supposedly they changed owners, and
haven’t been back there since.
Cobblestones…was to loud.
COFFEE
“The Brewd Awakening Coffeehaus”
http://www.brewdawakening.com A good hangout spot, not so good coffee though. Free wifi, and
board games available. Check out the event calendar on their
website, as they have live bands and poetry nights…

Anyone out there from the Lowell area? I moved to Dracut about two
years ago and am still finding my way around. I'd love to hear from
others in the area.

I went to school at UMass Lowell, lived there for 5 years, moved
away, and have since moved back to the area. Lived in Tewksbury and
now in Chelmsford, been back about 6 years.

Well, we haven't really found many suitable places to play here in
the Lowell area, but we play in Somerville at the Kirkland
Café, in Cambridge at Ryles Jazz Club, Dodge Street Bar
& Grille in Salem, MA, the Rhumb Line in Gloucester, and Jake's
Dixie Roadhouse in Waltham. We're looking to expand a bit, maybe up
into NH, or if any places here in Lowell open up.

Hi Debbie. I keep hearing a rumor that there's a really good
Chinese food restaurant in Billerica, but I don't know the name and
have yet to find it. Any ideas?

...The most popular one I'd say is Jade Pacific on Boston Road
going toward Burlington. I can't say it is the best... our family's
favorite was next door (Jade East), which is no longer in business
(No pun intended but my mother was "jaded" after Jade Pacific
refused to return a large sum of money that went missing from her
purse while the busboy came over and cleaned the table while her
purse was still on the bench and cleaned out her purse as well!(we
were standing putting our coats on) For me regarding Chinese food.
Once you get used to a certain place, you begin not to like to go
any where else. (oh wait...I guess I'm that way about Mexican too).
...So in my opinion figuring out the BEST is a personal thing. Here
is some guy's opinion I found on google about the area's Chinese
food...

Italian: http://www.fortunatosrestaurant.com About the only place I’ve gone to more than twice.

FESTIVALS…
Seasonally they have the "Folk Festival", "WinterFest", and "Doors Open" ( http://www.doorsopenlowell.org)
Places are starting to stay open till 8pm, rather than 7pm.
