Designed by Cambridge Seven Associates, the New England Aquarium revolutionized aquatic parks when it was unveiled in 1969. Housing the largest enclosed Ocean Tank in the world (20-feet deep, 40 feet in diameter, 200,000-gallon volume), the facility defied conventions by grouping species together in more natural settings, rather than segregating them for display in stunted tank windows. The award-winning design remains a jewel in the crown of the Boston waterfront, with innovative expansions (including Schwartz-Silver's West Wing, an IMAX Theater and an East Wing by TAMS and Esherick, Homsey, Dodge and Davis) only adding to its appeal. The updated aquarium includes a dramatic new entry, penguin pool, 200-seat cafe and two-level exhibit gallery -- in addition to old standbys like the popular harbor seal pool, Amazon Rain Forest and Antarctic environment exhibit.
